The federal health department had already issued an extension.
In a bipartisan vote, the Senate voted this week to end the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. The Department of Health and Human Services had previously extended the public health emergency status until January 11. The administration had promised states they would receive 60 days’ notice of when the emergency would end.
Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, who is a medical doctor, brought the resolution to the Senate. He outlined the many broad policies and mandates imposed by the government during the pandemic under the emergency declaration, before stating, “Congress must take the responsible action of reigning in this massive expansion of government and restore Americans’ fundamental rights by eliminating the COVID-19 national emergency declaration.”
